Pediatric Burn Care. Many patients with smaller burns can be effectively managed in a community hospital which allows children and their families to remain close to home reducing costs and some stress associated with hospital stays. Determine which burns can be treated in the primary care setting and which require referral to a burn specialist. Most burns do not require hospital admission but a small percentage are serious and need to be transferred to specialist burn centers where a multidisciplinary team of specially trained doctors including surgeons and anesthesiologists can care for the child. Provide anticipatory guidance for families referred to a comprehensive burn center.
